The 2027 FedEx Cup playoff schedule will retain most of its current venues, with the BMW Championship shifting from Bellerive to Liberty National in New Jersey. This change follows a season where players faced challenging conditions, including extreme heat in Memphis, St. Louis, and Atlanta.
As the tour prepares for a revamped 2028 schedule, several professionals shared their views on which regions would best suit the postseason format.
Sam Burns suggested that a single event in the Southeast would be beneficial, while noting the Northeast might be the strongest option. He expressed concern about the logistics of traveling from California to New Jersey.
Rory McIlroy countered by pointing to the feasibility of long-distance travel in other sports, arguing that a West Coast swing would be ideal if scheduled during a season when the courses are in peak condition. He noted that such a timing adjustment would also benefit television audiences.
Adam Scott, who serves on the PGA Tour board, emphasized the importance of selecting top-tier facilities. He stated that the best courses generally do not favor specific players and advised avoiding modern layouts that are excessively difficult. His priority, he said, is to showcase the highest quality golf available.
Brian Harman highlighted the potential of TPC Southwind, describing it as an underrated championship course. However, he noted that the extreme August heat in Memphis has hindered spectator attendance and player energy, despite the quality of the layout.
In a separate development, Scottie Scheffler is approaching Tiger Woods' record for career earnings on the PGA Tour. After winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scheffler is now within approximately $1.03 million of surpassing Woods. The upcoming Tour Championship offers a $40 million purse, which counts toward official earnings, providing a clear path for Scheffler to break the record.
