Two men have been charged with animal cruelty and neglect following the discovery of dozens of abandoned dogs along a roadside in St. Augustine, Florida. Authorities identified the suspects as Austin Moore, 32, and Anthony Dunham, 23. Investigators allege that the pair left the animals near the intersection of U.S. 1 and County Road 204 during May. The charges are allegations, and both men are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The rescue effort involved 67 dogs, according to the animal welfare group SMART Flagler. The organization reported that 23 of the animals have already been adopted. Seven dogs remain under veterinary care, while the remainder are being housed in foster homes as they continue their rehabilitation.
Caregivers noted that the dogs are still dealing with the physical and psychological effects of severe neglect. Many remain underweight and fearful, though some have begun to adapt to life in foster environments. Rescuers stated that potential adopters must pass home checks and participate in meet-and-greet sessions to ensure the animals are placed in safe, permanent homes.
The investigation also led to the arrest of Carolyn Loveman, 48, of Palm Coast, who is Moore’s mother. Deputies discovered dozens of additional neglected dogs at her residence, leading to her prior arrest.
