The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached an agreement with starting quarterback Baker Mayfield on a three-year contract extension worth $165 million. This deal secures Mayfield's position with the team through 2029 and alleviates any potential distractions regarding the quarterback role.
General Manager Jason Licht and Owner Joel Glazer expressed their support for Mayfield following the announcement. Glazer noted that Mayfield's arrival marked a significant new chapter for the franchise, highlighting his leadership over the past three years.
He emphasized that the extension, the largest in the team's history, reflects the Buccaneers' confidence in Mayfield and allows him and his family to make Tampa their home for the foreseeable future.
Although the Buccaneers were not at immediate risk of losing Mayfield for the upcoming season, there were concerns about the possibility of him becoming a free agent next offseason. Glazer had previously indicated his willingness to offer Mayfield a substantial contract, stating that he is well-liked by his teammates.
Licht also praised Mayfield's work ethic and competitive spirit, calling him the heartbeat of the team. He expressed gratitude for having such a dedicated quarterback and leader.
The timing of the deal surprised some, as Licht had recently mentioned that contract negotiations might not resume due to the impending start of the season. However, both sides ultimately agreed on terms before Week 1.
