The PGA Tour announced on Wednesday that Trey Mullinax has been suspended for six months for violating the organization's Anti-Doping Policy. The suspension follows a positive test for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency, though the specific medication was not identified in the Tour's statement.
Mullinax, who captured the Barbasol Championship in 2022, issued a statement accepting full responsibility for the violation. He explained that the infraction resulted from using a medication to treat a condition originally diagnosed in college without seeking prior approval under Tour rules. He emphasized that his failure to check the regulations was a matter of ignorance rather than an attempt to gain a competitive edge.
"I take full responsibility for what happened," Mullinax wrote. "At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to understand and follow the PGA Tour's Anti-Doping Policy and all of its rules and regulations. I failed to do that, and that is on me."
The golfer further clarified his intentions, stating he never sought to enhance his performance through banned means. "I want to be absolutely clear – I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage," he said. He acknowledged that his lack of knowledge was not a valid excuse and expressed gratitude to his supporters while looking forward to returning to competition.
The PGA Tour confirmed that Mullinax cooperated fully with the investigation and accepted the suspension. He will be eligible to return to PGA Tour-sanctioned events on January 16, 2027. The Tour's official statement noted the violation of the ban on performance-enhancing substances but did not elaborate on the specific details of the case.
