Jacob Rodriguez will enter the Miami Dolphins’ season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders as the NFL’s only rookie handling green-dot duties. The linebacker will relay the defensive calls for coach Jeff Hafley’s unit, a responsibility that reflects the organization’s confidence in him.
Rodriguez said he recognizes the demands of the assignment and appreciates the support from Miami’s front office, coaches and teammates. He said his focus is on continuing to contribute, encourage teammates and push the defense.
The Dolphins selected Rodriguez in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, even though the team had established linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson. Brooks was coming off an All-Pro season, while Dodson had recorded at least 100 tackles in each of the previous two seasons.
General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan said roster needs can change because of injuries and that Miami chose the players it considered the best fits. The Dolphins also selected an NFL-high 13 players in the draft, part of what the story described as a shift toward younger players.
Rodriguez competed with Dodson for a starting role during training camp. His ability to create turnovers stood out, including seven forced fumbles in 2025, which led the Big 12, and an interception of New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart during a joint practice. Miami later released Dodson while finalizing its 53-man roster, leaving Rodriguez positioned to win the job.
