The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are facing challenges as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season, including defensive tackle Vita Vea's holdout for a new contract and the inability to finalize an extension for quarterback Baker Mayfield. Despite these distractions, Mayfield has remained committed and fully engaged during training camp, expressing optimism about the team's prospects this year.
During a media session, Mayfield stated, "I think we’re gonna shock a lot of people this year," acknowledging that many expect the Buccaneers to have a losing record. Last season, the team started strong with a 6-2 record but faltered, losing seven of their last nine games and missing the playoffs, which has influenced national expectations for 2026.
The Buccaneers have made significant changes, including a new offensive staff led by offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. They have also added several new players, such as Rueben Bain Jr., Alex Anzalone, and Kenny Gainwell, to strengthen key positions.
Mayfield aims to improve his performance after a mixed 2025 season, where he was initially a candidate for the MVP award before injuries affected his play. He is focusing on refining his footwork with the help of new quarterbacks coach Chandler Whitmer, who emphasizes the importance of footwork in quarterback performance. Mayfield remarked on Whitmer's coaching style, saying, "He’s definitely a stickler about it."
