The Jacksonville Jaguars are intensifying their focus on Travis Hunter's role as a cornerback as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. While Hunter has been practicing on both offense and defense, recent training camp sessions indicate a shift towards cornerback, particularly noted during Day 14 of camp.
In this session, Hunter did not participate in any offensive 11-on-11 drills, instead concentrating solely on defensive work. Head coach Liam Coen explained that the decision was made to allow Hunter to gain more experience and coaching on defense, which is critical as the team approaches their first game against the Cleveland Browns on September 13.
Coen emphasized the importance of Hunter's development at cornerback, stating, "We just wanted to get him the seven-on-seven work and just really hone in on a little bit more corner."
Despite this focus on defense, the Jaguars continue to view Hunter as an essential part of their offensive strategy. Coen noted that Hunter is considered a key receiver, referring to him as the team's 3A or 3B receiver, and acknowledged that he has made significant contributions on offense throughout training camp.
The Jaguars have not indicated that Hunter will exclusively play cornerback, but the current emphasis suggests that he may assume a primary role in that position as the season begins. The team's approach indicates a balance between developing Hunter's skills on both sides of the ball while preparing for the demands of the upcoming season.
