Rasmussen's five scoreless push Rays to sixth straight, five-game East lead

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Drew Rasmussen handed the Rays five scoreless innings, and the lineup turned a midweek series finale into a rout.

Tampa Bay beat the Athletics 10-1 on Thursday night at Tropicana Field, opening a five-game lead in the American League East and stretching its winning streak to six. Rasmussen (15-5) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out three on 76 pitches. ESPN's box matches that line and lists his ERA at 2.72.

Tampa Bay has won his last 11 starts, the longest such post-break run for an AL pitcher since Minnesota's Johan Santana in 2006, according to the Associated Press.

The Rays (93-59) are already assured of no worse than a wild card and are pushing for their first AL East title since 2021. Thursday's win completed a three-game sweep of the Athletics and marked Tampa Bay's 16th series sweep of the season, matching the most by any club since the 2022 Dodgers.

Six-run fourth breaks it open

Chandler Simpson's go-ahead, two-run single highlighted a six-run fourth that turned a tight game into a mismatch. Liam Hicks, Simpson, Richie Palacios and Taylor Walls each drove in two runs. Simpson finished 2-for-5, raised his average to an AL-best .311 and stole two bases to reach a league-high 44.

Rasmussen stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fifth, then turned a 9-0 lead over to the bullpen. Casey Legumina allowed Lawrence Butler's solo home run in the sixth - Oakland's only run of the night. Brody Hopkins, Steven Matz and Alexander Cook each worked a clean inning to finish the 10-1 final.

Jeffrey Springs (4-14) took the loss after 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on five hits and two walks. The Athletics (61-92) managed five hits and committed two errors in the series finale.

Division cushion with 10 games left

Tampa Bay has won 10 of 12 and 16 of 23 and sits 34 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2023 season. Ten games remain, including a four-game set next week at the second-place Yankees. A five-game East lead is the kind of September margin that lets a club manage its rotation rather than chase every night.

Rasmussen did not need a complete game. Five scoreless innings, traffic managed, and a lineup that scored in bunches were enough to keep the streak and the division lead moving in the same direction.

Red Sox next at the Trop

Ian Seymour is lined up opposite Boston's Ranger Suarez for Friday's series opener against the Red Sox at Tropicana Field, per ESPN's probable pitchers. Rasmussen's Thursday win will show up as No. 15 - and as another night the Rays refused to let a visiting club hang around in St. Petersburg.
