NATO has signed a Letter of Intent to expand its Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Force by acquiring Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton aircraft. The agreement was finalized at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum, where four nations participated in the signing. This move aims to enhance allied maritime security and situational awareness across the alliance.

The MQ-4C Triton is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft originally developed for the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. It supports maritime patrol, signals intelligence, and search and rescue missions. The system provides persistent surveillance data that helps anticipate adversary behavior and supports joint military planning. Northrop Grumman stated that the aircraft operates collaboratively with crewed platforms through the timely exchange of data.

Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s global surveillance division, said the collaboration strengthens the Alliance’s ground and maritime surveillance capabilities. She noted that the Triton conducts intelligence gathering at higher altitudes with longer endurance than medium-altitude systems. The company added that the aircraft is positioned to provide operational flexibility to monitor maritime interests from the Mediterranean to the High North.

Northrop Grumman will build and deliver the aircraft in cooperation with NATO, the U.S. Navy, and trans-Atlantic industrial partners. Key European industry partners will supply components for the ground station and supporting data processing infrastructure. The company highlighted that the Triton complements NATO’s existing fleet of RQ-4D Phoenix aircraft, which have been operated from Sigonella, Italy. The lineage of the Triton to the Global Hawk family offers opportunities for cost-saving synergies in operations, maintenance, and training with the current Phoenix fleet.

The acquisition expands NATO’s organic ISR assets and enhances surveillance coverage across the alliance’s northern, eastern, and southern flanks. The organization stated that the new capabilities will inform joint decision-making for commanders. Further details regarding the specific timeline for deployment or the total cost of the acquisition were not provided in the source material.

Northrop Grumman employs about 1,100 people in Nocatee, according to local government records.
