LeBron James and the PGA Tour have announced a partnership to host a two-day golf event at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, next summer. The initiative, titled the LeBron James Family Foundation Invitational, is scheduled for July 6-7 on the club’s South course.

The tournament aims to link students from James’ I Promise program with athletes who have advanced through the tour’s Pathway to Progression Pro-Bound Five. This pathway creates opportunities for college players to join the Advocates Professional Golf Association circuit. The event seeks to introduce youth to golf while supporting diverse athletes pursuing professional careers.

James, who recently signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers, has expanded his interest in golf through various ventures, including a new YouTube channel that features trips with former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates. He emphasized the personal value of the sport in a statement regarding the collaboration.

Golf has become a passion of mine, and I’ve seen firsthand how the game can open doors, build relationships and create opportunities that many kids don’t even know exist, James said.

This partnership with the PGA Tour gives my foundation a chance to introduce my I Promise students and more people to the game at a young age, support talented athletes chasing their dreams, and continue investing in the city of Akron that means everything to me.

Brian Rolapp, CEO and commissioner of the PGA Tour, highlighted the shared vision between the organizations. The PGA Tour believes golf can create opportunity, change lives and bring communities together, Rolapp said. He noted that LeBron and the LeBron James Family Foundation have shown what is possible when that commitment is backed by action.

The event also marks a continued presence for the PGA Tour at Firestone, which hosted its final tour event there earlier this year after a 72-year history. The course has a long legacy, including hosting the 1954 Rubber City Open, two PGA Championships, and multiple major tournaments won by Tiger Woods.

Michele Campbell, executive director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, expressed pride in preserving the tour’s connection to Akron. With this event, we’re excited to not only support more diverse golfers getting into the game, but to also expose our I Promise students and more youth in Akron to the world of possibilities that golf opens up, Campbell said.

PGA TOUR employs about 964 people in Nocatee, according to local government records.
