The U.S. State Department has authorized a $4.5 billion agreement for Qatar to purchase four KC-46A aerial refueling aircraft. A notification sent to Congress on August 20, 2026, outlines the terms of the deal and identifies the principal contractors involved in the transaction.
Boeing, Pratt & Whitney Military Engines, RTX, and Northrop Grumman are listed as the primary firms responsible for the sale. The package includes the aircraft themselves along with spare parts for various components and missile warning sensors. Additional elements of the agreement cover repair and return support, training aids, devices, and spare parts.
The sale also encompasses personnel training, training equipment, trucks, and other transportation vehicles. Support for facilities and construction, jet fuel, and warranties are included in the total cost. According to Defense News, the KC-46A model provides aerial refueling support to the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and partner nations.
In its statement, the State Department said the proposed sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives. The department noted that the agreement helps improve the security of a strategic regional partner that has been an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.
The department further stated that the sale will increase Qatar’s capability to meet current and future threats by enhancing its defense capabilities and interoperability with U.S. and allied forces. It added that the transaction reinforces Qatar’s strategic role in regional security and that the country will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.
