NATO is set to integrate up to five MQ-4C Triton unmanned aerial vehicles into its existing network of aerial sensors. The announcement was made by Secretary-General Mark Rutte during the alliance's Defence Industry Forum held in Ankara, Turkey, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

The MQ-4C Triton, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, is designed for high-altitude, long-endurance missions over large areas of ocean. According to Rutte, the aircraft will assist the alliance in detecting threats early, protecting sea lines of communication, and supporting operations in demanding regions such as the High North. He noted that the planes can fly for extended periods at high altitudes and cover vast areas, including open water, more efficiently than most other aircraft.

Rutte emphasized that intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities are vital for the alliance. He stated that these systems provide the situational awareness needed to make informed decisions and stay ahead of potential threats. The addition of the Triton drones represents a concrete step to strengthen this capability, according to the secretary-general.

The manufacturing and support structure for the project involves collaboration across the Atlantic. Northrop Grumman will build the aircraft, while European industry partners will handle mission support, data systems, and infrastructure. Rutte described the effort as genuinely made in NATO, noting that it creates jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

The MQ-4C Triton is capable of operating at altitudes above 50,000 feet for more than 24 hours, with a range of 7,400 nautical miles. Current operators of the aircraft include the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. The event coincided with the NATO summit taking place in the region this week.

Details regarding the specific timeline for delivery or the total cost of the acquisition were not provided in the announcement.

Northrop Grumman employs about 1,100 people in Nocatee, according to local government records.
