NATO has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire Northrop Grumman’s MQ-4C Triton aircraft, a move intended to expand the alliance’s maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) force. The agreement was signed by four nations during the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum in Ankara, Turkey, on July 7, 2026.

The acquisition aims to enhance situational awareness and joint operational flexibility for allied nations. Northrop Grumman would be responsible for building and delivering the aircraft in collaboration with the U.S. Navy and trans-Atlantic industrial partners. Key European industry partners are expected to supply components for the ground station and supporting data processing infrastructure.

The MQ-4C Triton is designed to provide persistent maritime surveillance and operates collaboratively with crewed platforms across various domains. It complements NATO’s existing fleet of RQ-4D Phoenix aircraft, which the alliance has operated from Sigonella, Italy. The Triton offers longer endurance and multi-intelligence capabilities compared to medium-altitude systems, allowing for higher-altitude ISR operations.

Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s global surveillance division, stated that the collaboration strengthens the Alliance’s ground and maritime surveillance capabilities. She noted that the Triton provides operational flexibility to monitor maritime interests from the Mediterranean to the High North.

Built for the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force, the multi-intelligence MQ-4C Triton supports missions including maritime patrol, signals intelligence, and search and rescue. Its design leverages cost-saving synergies in operations, maintenance, and training with the existing Phoenix fleet due to their shared lineage within the Global Hawk family of aircraft.

NATO intends to use the Triton to expand its organic ISR assets, enhancing surveillance coverage across the alliance’s northern, eastern, and southern flanks. The aircraft’s capabilities are designed to anticipate adversary behavior, enabling better planning and joint military responses.

Northrop Grumman employs about 1,100 people in Nocatee, according to local government records.
