Northrop Grumman Corporation and Airbus Defence and Space have entered a strategic partnership aimed at integrating the MQ-4C Triton uncrewed aircraft system into NATO operations. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed during the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum in Ankara, Türkiye, on July 15, 2026.
The agreement seeks to support a recently announced Letter of Intent to expand the NATO Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Force. This expansion would add MQ-4C Triton systems to the alliance's existing fleet, enhancing maritime surveillance and operational integration across member nations.
The collaboration extends beyond the two primary companies to include a broader group of European industrial partners. Northrop Grumman and Airbus are coordinating with KONGSBERG Defence & Aerospace AS of Norway, Insta Advance Oy of Finland, Terma A/S of Denmark, and Exence S.A. of Poland. These firms are working to propose a comprehensive range of services to enable rapid capability deployment.
Under the terms of the MOU, the companies will assess their complementary capabilities to provide technology and services for the airborne platforms and related ground systems. Potential support areas include airborne and ground segment communications, data processing, exploitation and dissemination capabilities, and command and control services.
Jane Bishop, vice president and general manager of Global Surveillance at Northrop Grumman, stated that the collaboration with alliance members would bring advanced ISR capabilities to the alliance, bolstering regional security and enhancing Europe’s defense industrial base.
The cooperative effort builds upon existing relationships established over the last decade with the current NATO ISR Force's RQ-4D Phoenix fleet. The partners aim to leverage this proven expertise to meet the challenging schedule for the new fleet's implementation.
