Northrop Grumman is moving forward with the modernization of its E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Block II aircraft following a successful government-led critical design review. The approval clears the program to enter the next phase of integration and testing.
Kathy Warden, chief executive officer of Northrop Grumman, stated that the upgrade aims to help crews identify threats earlier and accelerate decision-making processes in contested environments. She emphasized that maintaining operational advantage requires these capabilities as missions evolve.
Warden described the Block II modification as the most substantial enhancement to the aircraft since its initial development. The company says the design improves situational awareness and crew efficiency while preparing the platform for future threats.
The upgrade utilizes a modular open systems approach and commercial off-the-shelf technology. Northrop Grumman indicated this strategy is intended to reduce costs and support long-term fleet sustainability.
Integration of Block II features will occur on the active E-2D production line for new aircraft. The company also plans to retrofit existing planes in service, expanding upgrade capacity across the current fleet.
