Northrop Grumman Corp. is initiating a sequence of Lunar Infrastructure Demo (LID) missions to assist NASA in developing the essential power and communication networks required for a permanent Moon Base. The initiative aims to mature technologies capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the lunar night while supporting long-term human activity at the moon’s South Pole.
To accelerate development, the company is repurposing hardware and technical components originally designed for the Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) program. These systems include power, data, and mechanical interfaces that will allow NASA to collect real-world performance data from the lunar surface more quickly than if entirely new technology were developed.
The project encompasses three distinct missions: LID-1, LID-2, and LID-3. Each mission is designed to validate and expand the infrastructure that Artemis astronauts and robotic explorers will rely upon. By demonstrating how critical surface assets can remain operational, protected, and connected during lunar shadows and nights, these tests will provide NASA with vital information to plan future Artemis campaigns and extended lunar operations.
David Schiller, vice president of civil space and sciences at Northrop Grumman, stated that the Lunar Infrastructure Demos are intended to transform the moon into a functional environment where astronauts can live, work, and conduct research for the benefit of humanity. He noted that the availability of reliable HALO technologies enables NASA to advance rapidly, establishing a durable framework for future lunar bases.
