The PGA Tour has extended an invitation to Patrick Reed for its upcoming fall events, marking a significant shift in the relationship between the tour and the golfer who helped lead the exodus to LIV Golf. Reed, whose suspension for participating in LIV events is set to expire in August, is currently reviewing his schedule for the remainder of 2026.
Reed originally departed the PGA Tour following a public dispute with Rory McIlroy and a subsequent lawsuit against the organization. He spent the 2026 season on the DP World Tour after leaving LIV Golf at the start of the year, with plans to return to the PGA Tour in 2027. The current invitation suggests the tour leadership is eager to welcome him back earlier than initially anticipated.
Brian Rolapp, the PGA Tour CEO, addressed the situation during a recent appearance at the Travelers Championship. When asked if he had held discussions with high-profile LIV players such as Jon Rahm or Bryson DeChambeau regarding a return, Rolapp declined to disclose private conversations. He stated that the tour’s primary focus remains on improving its own product and expanding its fan base rather than worrying about the future of LIV Golf or its contracted players.
Rolapp emphasized that he has no personal animosity toward LIV Golf, noting that the conflicts between the organizations occurred prior to his tenure. He described the current landscape as highly competitive and stated that the tour’s goal is to make the sport more accessible to new audiences. He indicated that the tour is focused on serving existing fans while growing the overall audience for the game.
The willingness of the PGA Tour to engage with Reed suggests that other players who left for LIV may find a viable path back to the tour. While Rahm remains under contract with LIV Golf for the foreseeable future, the precedent set by Reed’s treatment could influence future decisions for other players if LIV’s status changes. It remains unclear if any other specific players have initiated formal discussions with the tour leadership regarding a return.
