The PGA Tour announced Tuesday that global insurance and financial services company Sompo has entered into a multi-year agreement to become a sponsor for the tour's upcoming Championship Series. The partnership marks the first new sponsorship deal secured for the series since its launch was announced earlier this month.
Under the terms of the agreement, Sompo will initially sponsor a full-field event at Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa, California. This tournament is scheduled to take place from July 29 through August 1, 2027. During this period, the sponsorship will cover a standard PGA Tour event before transitioning to the new Championship Series format.
Beginning in 2028, Sompo’s sponsorship will shift to a new Championship Series tournament located in a different market. The specific location and dates for this future event have not yet been announced by the tour.
The announcement follows closely on the heels of news that the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, will also join the Championship Series in 2028. Dhruv Prasad, the PGA Tour’s chief commercial officer, stated that the organization is pleased to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the series.
Prasad noted that the tour looks forward to debuting the partnership in Napa next year and is excited to reveal the future home of the sponsored event in a new market later. The Championship Series will feature approximately 23 to 24 events each season, including The Players Championship, the four major championships, playoff events, and either the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup.
