The PGA Tour is preparing for a significant structural shift with a complete schedule overhaul planned for 2028. The organization will divide its calendar into two distinct levels: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The top tier, designated for the best competitors, will consist of approximately 23 to 24 events.

This group includes the four major championships, the Players Championship, and the FedEx Cup Playoff tournaments.

On Monday, the PGA Tour and the Travelers Championship jointly announced that the Connecticut-based tournament would be the first event confirmed for the exclusive Championship Series. The event takes place at TPC River Highlands and has historically been one of the most attended competitions on the professional golf circuit.

It will continue as a Signature Event in June 2027 before officially transitioning to the new top tier.

Brian Rolapp, the PGA Tour CEO, previously outlined the general framework of these changes but provided limited specifics regarding which tournaments would qualify for the higher level. The Championship Series is expected to feature roughly 120 players and offer substantial prize money.

Competitors who do not secure a spot in this group will compete in the Challenger Series, where they can earn promotion to the top tier for the following year.

Rolapp highlighted the success of the Travelers event during a press conference earlier this season at the 2026 tournament. He described the competition as highly successful by every metric and praised the partnership with the sponsor. He noted that the event aligns with the standards the Tour seeks for its Championship Series.

While details about other tournaments remain unclear, the inclusion of the Travelers Championship marks the first official confirmation of a specific event for the new structure. The full list of participants in both series has not yet been released.

PGA TOUR employs about 964 people in Nocatee, according to local government records.
