Gaming Money Is Pouring Into Florida's Midterms, and Most of It Comes From One Source

Gambling interests have given at least $12.2 million to Florida statewide candidates and political committees in the 2026 election cycle through July, and three of every four of those dollars came from a single contributor: the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

The tribe, which operates the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino brand and controls much of the gambling in the state, including online sports betting, has contributed $9.1 million, its largest political outlay since the 2022 cycle, according to reporting by the Tampa Bay Times.

Where the money went

The largest single destination was the campaign of Byron Donalds, which received $4 million.

Other recipients include the political committee of Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson at $1 million, incoming Senate President Jim Boyd's committee at $750,000, the Republican Party of Florida at $750,000 and the Florida Democratic Party at $200,000.

The giving crosses party lines, though not evenly.

The newer money

Beyond the tribe, online prediction market platforms such as Kalshi, and betting platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings, which offer online casino gambling in other states, have contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Those companies' interest points at the next fight: whether Florida's gambling market, where the Seminole Tribe holds exclusive rights to sports betting under its compact with the state, opens any further.

Why it matters to voters

Campaign money at this scale is a bet on policy. The contributions arrive ahead of a legislative session and an election in which the shape of Florida gambling, from prediction markets to online casinos, is expected to be contested, and the filings show who is paying to be at that table.
