The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have executed a project partnership agreement aimed at advancing construction for major Everglades restoration initiatives in South Florida. According to a report released on July 28, 2026, this arrangement is characterized as a unique collaboration designed to accelerate progress by combining federal financial resources with state-level operational capabilities.
The agreement focuses on several key projects, most notably the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir. This facility has been described by officials as a central component of the broader restoration strategy. The partnership builds upon an earlier commitment made in July 2025 between the State of Florida and the federal government to expedite these efforts.
Drew Bartlett, executive director of the South Florida Water Management District, highlighted the strategic nature of the new accord. He stated that the agreement allows the state and the Corps to "expedite Everglades restoration using federal funds and state agility." This approach aims to leverage the distinct advantages of both governmental levels to move construction timelines forward.
The initial agreement from July 2025 established the framework for this continued cooperation.
