Late Surge Seals Victory
The San Diego Padres overcame an early deficit to defeat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Sunday. The turning point arrived in the eighth inning, when San Diego exploded for four runs to erase a tie and pull ahead for good. The victory improved the Padres' record to 53-53, while the Marlins fell to 52-54.
Early Struggles and Home Runs
Miami took control early, scoring three runs in the second and third innings. The Marlins' offense began to wake up in the bottom of the second, with Conine reaching base safely on an error before Hicks scored on a throwing error by catcher Campusano. Pauley then singled to right field to drive in Conine, giving Miami a 2-0 lead.
The margin extended in the third when Stowers homered to right field, a 409-foot shot that made it 3-0.
San Diego answered in the fifth inning. Machado doubled to left field, allowing Cronenworth to score and cut the deficit to 3-1. The Padres continued to chip away at the lead, eventually tying the game in the eighth inning.
Machado homered to center field, a 399-foot blast that drove in two runs and leveled the score at 3-3. Merrill followed with a solo home run to right center, a 395-foot shot that gave San Diego its first lead of the game at 4-3.
