Linebacker Jahlani Tavai has joined the Jacksonville Jaguars following a travel ordeal that lasted over 24 hours from Hawaii. Tavai's arrival comes at a crucial time for the team, as they are dealing with injuries among their linebacker ranks, making his experience valuable.
Tavai signed with the Jaguars on August 6 and quickly integrated into the team's linebacker rotation during training camp. He participated in the Jaguars' recent 24-20 victory over the New Orleans Saints, where he played 52 defensive snaps and recorded six tackles, tying for the team lead.
Tavai expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, "It was a good opportunity to have fun and play football."
The Jaguars are facing challenges with injuries, particularly with projected back-up middle linebacker Jack Kiser, who has not practiced since July 29 due to a knee issue, and rookie Parker Hughes, who is out for the season. Tavai's experience, which includes 112 games in regular season and playoffs, positions him well to secure a spot on the roster.
Jaguars coach Liam Coen praised Tavai for his communication skills and professionalism, noting that he has adapted quickly to the team's needs. Tavai, originally a second-round pick by the Detroit Lions in 2019, has previously played for the New England Patriots, where he started a total of 44 games from 2022 to 2024.
