Florida State University administrators are concentrating on restructuring the athletic department rather than making an immediate decision about football coach Mike Norvell, whose future remains under review.
The university is seeking to improve revenue generation, resource management and business operations across athletics. Its next athletic director is expected to bring corporate strategy experience, as FSU works on redefining the position and developing a long-term financial plan.
tallahassee.com reported that university leaders would prefer to wait until the end of the season before determining Norvell's status. President Richard McCullough and Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins have indicated that broader organizational issues are currently taking priority.
Collins told The New York Times that Norvell was brought back for a reason. “It’s kind of tough after two games to just say, ‘Yeah, we don’t see it,'” Collins said.
The approach could change if losses continue and frustration grows among fans and boosters. FSU is scheduled to travel to Alabama on Sept. 19 as a nearly three-touchdown underdog, followed by an October schedule that includes three ACC contenders and a Friday night game.
