The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have claimed cornerback Kevin Knowles from the Kansas City Chiefs after the latter released him. Initially, the Buccaneers had no plans for a significant roster change, having assessed around 1,000 players and deciding to stick with their existing 53-man roster. However, the situation shifted when they identified Knowles as a player who could fulfill a specific need within their team.

Head Coach Todd Bowles explained that while the team evaluates available players, they were not looking for a complete overhaul. The decision to claim Knowles came after the Chiefs made roster adjustments, making him available. The Buccaneers submitted their claim on Sunday night and were awarded Knowles ahead of the Chicago Bears, who also expressed interest.

Knowles is expected to provide crucial depth to a secondary that started the season with only eight defensive backs. His primary value, however, lies in his special teams abilities, which Bowles highlighted as a key factor in the decision to bring him on board.

With fellow player Josh Hayes placed on injured reserve, Knowles is anticipated to step into a role as a gunner and kickoff specialist, addressing an immediate need for the Buccaneers.

During his rookie season with Kansas City, Knowles demonstrated his potential by tying for the team lead with eight solo kick-coverage tackles and recovering a fumble. His experience and performance on special teams align with the Buccaneers' goal of enhancing their kicking and coverage units this offseason, a priority underscored by the hiring of coordinator Danny Smith.

Bowles noted the significant impact a strong special teams unit can have on a team's success, estimating that it could contribute to three to four additional victories in a season. This is particularly relevant for the Buccaneers, who narrowly missed the playoffs in 2025, as even one more win could have changed their postseason outcome.

Knowles now has the opportunity to help ensure Tampa Bay improves its performance this season.
