The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are preparing to open their 2026 campaign on Sunday with a road game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. The matchup features franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield facing an old division rival. However, the Bucs' defensive unit faces potential personnel challenges before kickoff.

Team insider Rick Stroud reported Wednesday that rookie edge rusher Reuben Bain Jr. could be sidelined for Week 1 because of a shoulder injury. Bain Jr., selected in the first round of April’s draft, was expected to play a significant role in the team’s defensive overhaul following the retirement of Lavonte David and the free agency departure of cornerback Jamel Dean to Pittsburgh.

Stroud’s Wednesday afternoon update on social media platform X provided further details on Tampa Bay’s practice status. Outside linebacker Bain Jr., wide receiver Jalen McMillan (knee), linebacker Christian Rozeboom (foot), and tackle Justin Skule (oblique) participated in limited sessions. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka (toe) and guard Billy Schrauth were listed as full participants.

Running back Sean Tucker did not practice due to a hamstring issue. If Bain Jr. remains unavailable, the Buccaneers are expected to rely on veteran Al-Quadin Muhammad to help fill the gap at edge rusher.

The defensive unit has expressed high regard for Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Linebacker Alex Anzalone noted the respect the group holds for the opposing signal-caller. Despite the injury concerns, Tampa Bay aims to start the season with a win after missing the playoffs last year for the first time since 2019.

Specifics regarding Bain Jr.’s final status or the exact nature of his shoulder ailment were not provided in the initial report.
