The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are assessing their running back situation as they prepare for the upcoming season. After a challenging previous season, Bucky Irving is returning to full health, and Kenneth Gainwell has joined the team following a successful stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Together, they could form a dynamic running back duo.

Sean Tucker, who had a notable performance last season with the highest touchdown percentage among running backs with at least 25 carries, was initially thought to be secure in the RB3 position. However, recent comments from Bucs reporter Greg Auman suggest that Josh Williams may be competing for that role.

Auman highlighted financial considerations as a potential factor in the team's decision-making. Tucker's contract includes a full restricted-free-agent tender worth $3.52 million, which is a significant amount for a third-string running back. There are concerns that the Buccaneers might consider releasing Tucker in favor of Williams, who has shown comparable preseason performance.

Both players have similar rushing statistics, with Williams gaining 36 yards on 10 carries and Tucker 35 yards on nine carries, and both have scored a touchdown.

Additionally, with the addition of Gainwell and Irving's return, the role of the RB3 may be less critical than in past seasons. This raises the question of whether the team would want to allocate $3.52 million to a player who may see limited playing time.

While Auman does not predict Tucker will be cut, he notes that Williams has been performing well and could be seen as a more budget-friendly option. Tucker has demonstrated his ability to contribute in various roles, making him a valuable asset regardless of his position on the depth chart.

With only a week remaining before the final roster decisions are made, the Buccaneers will soon reveal who will make the 53-man roster, who will be placed on the practice squad, and who may need to seek opportunities with other teams.
