Miami Dolphins first-round rookie Chris Johnson is facing scrutiny after a difficult debut at a new position. Johnson, who played primarily outside cornerback at San Diego State, started at nickel cornerback for Miami against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 13.
The Raiders won 27-13 in Las Vegas. Johnson was credited with giving up six receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns in coverage on 11 targets.
Sports Illustrated analyst Justin Melo included Johnson among the players who need to answer critics in Week 2. Melo noted that Miami is using many rookies in important roles and described Johnson's opening performance as particularly disappointing because the Raiders did not have prominent pass catchers in their lineup.
The Miami Herald's Omar Kelly also questioned whether moving Johnson to the nickel position as a rookie could be too demanding. Kelly said opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators could continue testing Johnson, and that Miami's coaches may need to reduce his responsibilities at that spot if the problems persist.
Johnson is expected to face another challenge in Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers. Six-time Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans, who usually plays outside, took most of his snaps from the slot in San Francisco's Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, potentially putting him in Johnson's coverage area.
