The Miami Dolphins signed linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. on Friday, adding him to their roster ahead of a preseason game against the New York Giants at Hard Rock Stadium. This move brought the total number of linebackers on the team to ten.
Dix was signed as a depth option, particularly since the Dolphins were without Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson for the game. The situation worsened when fifth-round pick Trey Moore was injured just two defensive snaps into the matchup, which forced Dix to take on a significant role.
Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley praised Dix's performance, noting that he had only met the player earlier that day. Hafley explained that Dix had to quickly learn the defensive calls and lead the team through the second half, a scenario he described as unprecedented in his experience.
"We had to tell him the call, he had to give the call, then we had to tell him what to do on every single play," Hafley said.
Dix played 34 defensive snaps during the game and recorded three tackles. While making the Dolphins' roster may be challenging due to the depth at the linebacker position, his performance could help him secure a spot on the practice squad.
