Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie defensive back Keionte Scott is on the verge of securing a starting position as the team's nickelback. According to Justin Melo of NFL Draft OnSI, Scott has been given numerous opportunities to claim the role, and indications suggest he may start in Week 1 of the regular season.

Scott's main competitor for the nickelback spot was Jacob Parrish, who has been listed as the starting outside corner on the unofficial depth chart. With Parrish positioned outside, the competition for the starting role has shifted to Scott and Benjamin Morrison, a former second-round pick entering his second NFL season.

Morrison's potential is noted, but his injury history raises concerns about his reliability on the field.

Morrison struggled with injuries that caused him to miss much of his rookie season and the majority of the preseason in his second year. This situation has opened the door for Scott, who would seamlessly step into the nickel role if he starts. In this scenario, Parrish would remain outside, minimizing the need for defensive adjustments.

Scott, selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, has shown promise after transferring from Auburn to Miami, where he excelled during the Hurricanes' National Championship run. He recorded a notable pick-six against Ohio State and has accumulated significant playing time, with 1,293 snaps in the slot and 800 as a safety.

In the preseason, Scott played 78 snaps, achieving four tackles and three run stops, earning a 69.9 grade from Pro Football Focus, indicating above-average performance. His coverage grade of 69.3 reflects his ability to effectively defend against receivers. The Buccaneers now have a week to determine if Scott's performance has earned him a spot in the starting nickel defense.
