The Detroit Lions are being considered as a potential destination for Jonnu Smith, a former Pro Bowl tight end who previously played for the Miami Dolphins. Smith, who had a standout season in 2024 with the Dolphins, recording 884 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, became discontent with the team when they did not offer him a contract extension after his successful performance.

This discontent led to his trade to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where his production declined significantly, resulting in his release this offseason.

NFL analyst Kristopher Knox has noted that while Smith may not replicate his previous success, he could serve as a valuable asset for the Lions, particularly given their injury concerns at the tight end position. Current tight end Sam LaPorta is dealing with a hip injury, leaving his status for Week 1 uncertain. Knox suggested that Smith could provide crucial depth for a pass-heavy offense.

In addition to the Lions, there is speculation about a possible reunion between Smith and the Dolphins. Smith expressed interest in returning to Miami, indicating that he feels at home with the team. However, financial negotiations have not yet aligned.

Miami sportscaster Josh Moser reported that Smith is eager to compete, while The Miami Herald's Omar Kelly mentioned that Smith could significantly enhance the Dolphins' offensive options, provided he has not lost his abilities over the past year.

As the 2026 NFL regular season approaches, the situation regarding Smith's next team remains fluid, with further details not yet clear regarding his potential signing with either the Lions or a return to the Dolphins.
