Former Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos has entered the NCAA transfer portal after being granted a fifth year of eligibility. This decision follows a temporary injunction from a Kentucky judge in an eligibility lawsuit that also involved former Missouri basketball player Mark Mitchell. The injunction protects Castellanos from a recent ruling in a Colorado lawsuit that impacted the eligibility of athletes from the 2022 class.
Castellanos, a three-star recruit from Georgia, initially signed with UCF in the 2022 recruiting class before transferring to Boston College, where he started for two seasons. He joined Florida State as a senior in 2025, completing 58.3% of his passes for 2,760 yards, along with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
He also rushed for 557 yards and nine touchdowns, notably leading the Seminoles to an upset victory over No. 8 Alabama in the opening week of the last season.
Reports indicate that Texas Tech has emerged as a likely destination for Castellanos as he seeks to continue his college football career. The Red Raiders have faced challenges in their quarterback situation, particularly after Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby was ruled out for the season due to a gambling scandal.
Current starter Will Hammond is recovering from a torn ACL, and while Texas Tech has depth, the loss of Sorsby has left them with limited options behind Hammond.
