Riley Patterson is poised to take on the kicking duties for the Miami Dolphins after Zane Gonzalez was released due to a significant injury sustained during training camp. Patterson, who finished last season with an impressive field-goal conversion rate of 93.1% (27 of 29) and 34 of 35 on extra points, is eager to demonstrate that his success can be repeated.
Despite being one of the top kickers in the league, Patterson faced competition when the Dolphins signed Gonzalez shortly after free agency began. Gonzalez, who has a strong record of 18 successful field goals from 50-plus yards, was seen as a formidable challenger. However, with Gonzalez's injury, Patterson's position has become secure once again.
Patterson has expressed confidence in his abilities, stating, "I definitely feel like I’m hitting the ball harder than I ever have. I’m stronger than I ever have. I feel I can hang with most guys in the NFL as far as distance." Last season, he achieved a career-long field goal of 54 yards and was 3 for 4 on attempts from 50-plus yards.
Before joining the Dolphins, Patterson had a varied career, having played for several teams, including Detroit and Jacksonville. He has consistently performed well, with previous seasons showing success rates of 13 for 14 and 30 for 35. However, he has also faced challenges, losing jobs to other kickers in the league.
The Dolphins' kicker situation has been fluid, especially after the departure of Jason Sanders, the team's most accurate kicker in history, who was cut earlier this year. Patterson's opportunity arose last August when he signed with the team after a successful tryout, outperforming several competitors.
