The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have provided clarification regarding the contract extension of defensive tackle Vita Vea, which had generated confusion in recent reports. Some sources indicated that the extension was worth $30 million, while others reported it as $48 million. Jenna Laine from ESPN explained that both figures could be accurate depending on the interpretation of the deal.
According to Laine, the extension adds $6 million to Vea's existing $18 million salary for 2026, totaling $24 million that becomes guaranteed, along with an additional $24 million guaranteed for 2027. This results in a total of $48 million over two years, which the Buccaneers view as a two-year deal at $24 million per year.
From Vea's perspective, the extension represents $30 million in new money, positioning him favorably compared to peers like Dexter Lawrence, who signed a one-year, $28 million extension. Vea's new contract places him among the top five interior defensive linemen in terms of salary.
Despite the confusion, Vea expressed satisfaction with the agreement, stating he did not seek to be the highest-paid player but wanted a contract more in line with his peers and security beyond his current deal. He emphasized his commitment to the Buccaneers, saying, "I got drafted here. I made Tampa my home.
I love it here. The guys on the team are like brothers to me."
